How to Evaluate Wedding Photographer as a Bride or Groom

Often it is easiest to evaluate a photographer's work first, and then to meet the photographer.
If you are following that process after you find a few photographer options you like, the next step is a 'meet and greet' perhaps over the phone or in the office.

Here are some important characteristics to evaluate.
  • Trust
    • Do I think this person can get it done?
    • Approach to Interaction
  • Personality
    • Do you want this person to do the job? Do you get along? Do you find this person comforting, acceptable, reassuring or irritating, offensive
    • This is is someone who will be along with you for a very important day, a day you will want to be comfortable and at your best
    • Does he/she tell offensive jokes
    • Do you vibe well, Do you trust them around your valuables like wedding rings, Do you feel relaxed around them or is there something that puts you on edge
  • Directing Style
    • Does the photographer direct the action, recreating moments to get the shot just right? Is that what you want?
    • Does the photographer follow along and capture what he/she can as they go

Feel free to share your needs and desires
  • Do you need classic posed photos
  • How do you feel about candids
  • Are there a few 'must have' shots
