This is one of the few times in your life you can dress to kill with no holds barred. Some women are more excited about this than others, but just remember that you have a chance to do a little something (or a lot of something) to stand out from the crowd.

I’ll walk you through what to think about when buying an Indian wedding dress and reception dress.

WEDDING DRESS

  • What color? ...Different regions in India have different tradition colors that a bride is supposed to wear. Normally the bride follows her own family’s traditions. A few examples of traditional bridal colors by regions are: Most places wear red, Gujaratis wear white with a little red, Punjabis wear pink, South Indians wear blue.
  • What type of dress? ...Most brides choose to wear a sari (blouse + one long piece of fabric) or lengha (blouse + skirt + scarf piece).
  • What will I be most comfortable in?
  • Who will help me get dressed, will he/she do a good job with this type of outfit?
  • How ‘heavy’ do I want my outfit to be? A lengha lends itself to heavier embroidery and designs than a sari.
  • How will this dress look in my pictures?
  • Will there be any objections to me wearing this?

Wedding Jewelry

Indian brides traditionally wear a good portion of gold jewelry. In addition to the normal earrings, necklace, and bangles, a bride should consider adding a few other accessories such as a tikka (adorns hair and forehead), rings+bracelet combo, anklets, nose ring, belly chain, arm band. These are small decorative touches that will stand out and be something special for this day.

RECEPTION DRESS

  • What color? Brides often chose a color which matches or coordinates with the colors they chose for decorating the reception hall, after all, this event is centered around you, why not have the entire décor compliment your outfit
  • What type of dress? Again, saris and lenghas are the most popular outfits for receptions.
  • What will I be most comfortable in for eating, dancing, socializing?
  • How ‘heavy’ do I want my outfit to be?
  • How will this dress look in my pictures?
  • Will there be any objections to me wearing this?

Reception Jewelry

Jewelry should match your dress. Again it is nice to have a little something special in the jewelry department, if you’d like.
