Wedding Decisions
in the time of Corona Virus

Picture
We are living through unusual times. And this affects weddings, and how we think about weddings, vendors, and celebrations. Here are a few things to consider as you go through the process.

Venue & Date

To have your wedding you need a date! Signing your venue gives you a location and a date. Your first priority should be booking your venue. Now. Dates at venues are going especially quickly as many weddings which were planned for Summer 2020 have been postponed to a future date. Each venue's availability is changing on a daily basis. This means that holds may not be what they used to be, and there is a definitive distinction between ‘held’ and ‘signed, sealed, delivered’. A vendor is booked when the contract is signed and the deposit is paid. So if you’ve got that special feeling, work quickly to finalize things. Moving quickly is a win-win, venues appreciate your speed, and you will have comfort in knowing you have a venue locked in and now, you have a wedding.

Vendors

Many couples are hold off on booking vendors until the dust settles. This reduces the risk of losing deposits if rescheduling is deemed necessary in the future. There are reasons to make exceptions. Book your ‘must have’ vendors. This means, if you already know who you want to use – Book them now.

Example: You know you want a DJ. If you want “a DJ” you can wait to sign up and choose from available options when you are ready to commit. If you want “This DJ” then book them now.

How do you know if you want "This DJ" - this is usually someone whose work you love, perhaps you saw someone’s work at a friend’s event, or you have become a big fan on social media, or you have a top priority on your wedding day and you want a guarantee that you’ve hired the best (It wouldn't be my wedding if I didn't have the best DJ ever).

Note again that wedding vendors are either Booked or Not. A signed contract and deposit, is what guarantees service. If you’re not sure which service level you want, you can always book the ‘basic’ package, guaranteeing service for your wedding day, and when you're ready you can upgrade the package when your plans are a bit more clear.
Apply this rule of thumb to each vendor. Photo, Video, Décor, Flowers, Officiant, Music, Catering, Cake...

Plan A and Plan B

In the current circumstances, I wanted to remind you of the many layers involved of what we / Hollywood often think of as weddings. Weddings are often a combination of many pieces: Religious ceremony, Legal commitment, Family and community gathering, a Party. While it is great to have a celebration that incorporates all of these things, it is also possible to separate them and do them one at a time or only a select few of them. When considering your ‘Plan A’ and ‘Plan B’ these are the categories to consider. Some will be easier than others.
