Spring and the Stars

Today, the first day of spring, is a solar eclipse as well, and that is what has inspired today's post - Astrology. Many Indian traditions and religious practices are based on astrology and sun and moon patterns. For weddings, birth dates and numbers are used to determine the most auspicious date for getting married. Many South Indians have their wedding timed down to the precise minute! North Indians get married in the middle of night. And here in the states many get married based on when they can book the hall. For whatever traditions you are following, enjoy this auspicious day!

If you are planning an Indian event at your home, this one is for you! A few best practices for Indian functions at home:
  • Shoes - Use cubby boxes at entry points so guests have a place to keep their shoes. (There are affordable shoe cubby boxes.) It helps in a big way.
  • Bathrooms - Place a sign on bathrooms for guests. Also make sure they have working locks, refills of toilet paper, soap, and a hand towel.
  • Trash – Additional trash cans allow tables to be cleared and reused.
  • Save the Carpet – Indian food or henna often stains. Use sheets (ideally rubber lined sheets) to be a first line of defense against spills. Be sure to overlap the sheets by a foot. As people walk the sheets will shift slightly with the movement and the overlap will prevent exposed carpet.
  • Flow – Take  moment to think through the flow of guests. Where will they enter, eat, drink, socialize, sit, dance. And plan accordingly with things such as not putting food and drinks right next to each, and having chairs for elderly guests.
  • Added Touches – Love social media...put up a sign so people can hashtag. Music...have your playlist ready and hooked up to speakers.
